Mary Elliott
In this episode of the Bees Knees Podcast, host Mary Elliott welcomes special guest Nicole, who shares her experiences and advice on navigating knee surgery and recovery. Nicole had osteoarthritis in both knees and after trying various treatments, decided to undergo surgery. With little expectations going into the surgery, Nicole was emotionally and physically prepared. Following the surgery, she underwent six weeks of rehab which included in-home physical therapy and outpatient sessions. However, she faced challenges such as post-anesthesia nausea and discomfort with the CPM machine given to her.

When Nicole’s surgeon expressed concerns about her limited range of motion, she turned to the Bees Knees Podcast for help. Through the podcast, she connected with the team and received an X10 machine, along with a supportive coach named Kim. Within 24 hours of using the machine, Nicole was able to stop most of her medication, except for hydrocodone, as it took away the pain and inflammation in her knee. Within two weeks, she achieved 120 degrees of knee bending and reached full extension within three or four days. This success motivated Nicole to undergo surgery on her second knee.
Four weeks after the second surgery, she achieved 124 degrees of bending and zero degrees of extension. The X10 machine significantly reduced her pain and reliance on medication, making her second surgery experience much better than the first.
Nicole’s success with the machine even inspired a friend to undergo surgery. The machine offers a painless alternative to traditional physical therapy, which caused Nicole pain and led to scar tissue formation. By moving fluid out of the knee joint and preventing scar tissue reaccumulation, the machine provides precision, repeatability, and progress tracking, boosting confidence in achieving recovery goals.
Preventing Inflammation
Nicole discusses how the machine prevented inflammation in knee after surgery. The back-and-forth motion of the machine helped move all the inflammation out of the joint. They mention that the inflammation after the second surgery was significantly less compared to the first surgery. Family and friends noticed their improved mood and walking ability, providing positive feedback.
Nicole shares her conversation with a medical assistant about the machine and expresses disappointment that insurance does not cover it. She continued to use a pedal exerciser for knee rotation and strength building. Despite some residual pain, she remained optimistic about their recovery and look forward to activities like gardening and hiking.
Support from loved ones and the encouragement from coaches played a crucial role in Nicole’s journey. She further discusses the cost of the machine, considering it priceless and worth the sacrifice. Insurance coverage and machine rental options are mentioned, as well as the availability of X10 coaches for guidance. Nicole advises listeners to be mindful of medication use and gradually reduce dosage under the guidance of healthcare professionals.
How to Avoid MUA
The conversation concludes with a discussion on the importance of weaning off opioid medications. Nicole mentions the lack of instructions from their surgeon’s office, which is concerning given the opioid crisis. She highlights the role of the X10 in managing pain and facilitating a faster recovery process.
I express my gratitude towards Nicole for her insights and care for others. Nicole’s journey serves as an inspiration to listeners, and the podcast team is there to support her. Nicole, in turn, expresses gratitude towards the X10 team and considers their support as doing God’s work.
The episode ends with Nicole’s appreciation for every moment of her life.
